Regulars/Recruits with knowledge of paddling on moving water:

Come along and see what Edge has to offer.  Every Wednesday there are activities to progress your paddling skills and confidence and is an opportunity to meet local paddlers, train/take qualifications, make friends and plan club trips away – river running, surfing, sea kayaking etc.

Cost – members this is included in your membership – non members £10 per session

Novices:

For those who have had only occasional experience or haven’t been paddling for some years – the following dates as geared specifically for you:

Edge will provide you with all the kayaking kit you need and a coach dedicated to creating the best progression programme for you, so you will quickly feel comfortable and confident on the water.  You just need to bring some clothes you don’t mind getting wet – shorts, t shirt, trainers etc

12th/19th February 2013 – Isleworth Pool.  Tuesday 9-10pm (arrive 8:45pm), £3 /£6 non-members

Edge is running its next two pool sessions with a specific focus on Sea Kayaking

Practise rolling, rescues and self rescues all in balmy waters of Isleworth swimming pool

Edge can provide a few kayaks – but ideally bring along your own boats to put yourself, and them, through their paces

Arrive in good time to change, register, pay and get your boat so you can start at 9pm

Where: South Wales, based in the Brecon Beacons we are planning to paddle on the river Usk or other rivers in the area depending on the group.

When : Weekend of the 1st-3rd February.
Cost : £80.00 this will include excellent coaching, accommodation, fuel and toll charges, food will be an additional cost. £40.00 deposit required in advance.
Who ?: Paddlers who are of a 2* standard who have paddled the tidal Thames and who have attempted a roll in the swimming pool.

This is a fun day spent smashing up perfectly good kayaks to then patches them up again!

The course will cover ‘everything’ about boat repairs from how to patch a hole while still on the water to a more robust repair if you were on e.g. a multi-day expedition and finally cover how to fix it properly when you are back home again. You will also learn how to avoid common causes of damage to your boat while transporting it and receive numerous other tips and tricks on how to look after your boat and carry out preventive maintenance.

We will have both plastic and fibreglass boats to work on and there will be plenty of opportunities to get stuck in with the various substances, materials and techniques!

This is a land based course suitable to all paddling disciplines and skill levels and you are not required to get wet unless you want to take part in the on-the-water repair demonstrations.

Date: Saturday 19 Jan 2013 09.30 – 17.00

 Venue: Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre in London, 235a Westferry Road, Docklands, London E14 3QS

 Cost: £75 per person.

 Equipment: We  will have both plastic and fibreglass kayaks available to damage and practice repair on during the course and all necessary repair kit and materials will be provided (feel free to bring your own if you want to try it out!).

Safety goggles and protective gloves will be available to borrow but you must make sure you wear appropriate clothing and accept that they might get stained or damaged.

About the instructor: Howard Jeffs (http://www.howardjeffs.org/) is one of the most renowned paddling coaches in the UK and he has over 40 years of paddling experience with numerous prestigious expeditions around the world to his name.

He also has a unique and vast knowledge in boat repairs after having designed and been involved with the manufacturing of numerous kayaks, canoes and other small water crafts for the last 35+ years.

Howard’s immense experience, unique knowledge about boat building, and above all, a great sense of humour and storytelling skills makes for a great and entertaining day!

Coaches:

Helen and Mark are both very accomplished paddlers and frequent guest coaches on symposiums and kayaking events around US, Europe and the rest of the world.  They are based out of California, US where they offer coaching and trips via Greenland or Bust (http://www.greenlandorbust.org/).

Cost:

Each session cost £60 and if you choose to book two sessions you receive a £20 discount and only pay £100.

You also have the option to purchase a copy of the DVD “Simplifying The Roll with Helen Wilson” at the reduced price of £15 at the time you book your session.

Overview:

This class is for those working on a beginning roll, an other-side roll or cleaning up an existing roll. The class will move through a steady progression of on-land exercises, in-water activities as well as in-kayak practice and will include techniques such as the Balance Brace, the Standard Roll and/or the Butterfly Roll. The techniques examined can be used with any type of paddle and any type of kayak.

Participants will receive individualised coaching during the class, and a personalised action plan at the end.

Prerequisites:

Ideal for beginner and intermediate paddlers wishing to improve their skills base.

Equipment:

There will be a demo fleet of Sea Kayaking UK (http://www.seakayakinguk.com) kayaks and Lendal (http://www.lendal.com) paddles available for the sessions and must be booked in advance. If you have not booked a kayak and paddle for your session you must bring your own equipment.

There will also be a selection of Greenland paddles available for participants to try and experiment with.

The sessions are based outside but in slightly heated and chlorinated pool water so full immersion gear is required.

Come and join us on our last Evening paddle this year. Watch the fantastic firework display that will be taking place above our heads.
Bishops Park in Fulham will be the venue for the fireworks, the best place to enjoy them by far is on the river. Will be followed by a warming drink in the Blue Anchor pub afterwards.
