Chelsea Kayak Club invites you to “London’s Lost Rivers” – A talk by Tom Bolton

6.30pm, Sunday 15th April, talk starts at 7.00pm and should last around an hour.

Draft House Westbridge, 74-76 Battersea Bridge Road, London, SW11 3AG

Thank you Nick White

When we think of London’s river, the vast thoroughfare of the Thames immediately springs to mind. But this ancient city was built around other rivers too – and traces of these still remain, for those who know where to look.

Author of “London’s Lost Rivers: A Walker’s Guide”, Tom Bolton will guide you beyond the dark apertures that line the Thames at low water and reveal the secret network that spreads across the city, from picturesque Hampstead in the North to the hidden suburbs of South London, and runs beneath some of London’s most iconic and historic sites.

So, if you wish to discover why the Oval is oval; what spirit was made with Fleet water; which buried river was known as the Tigris and which the Nile; which part of south London was the world’s lavender capital; and which rivers flow under the Bank of England and Buckingham Palace – then join us for this special evening.

The talk will be held upstairs at the Draft House Westbridge (just south of Battersea Bridge – details below). The Westbridge does excellent food and an amazing range of beers, if you want to stay for something to eat and drink after.

It promises to be an informative and entertaining evening and also a great opportunity to meet up with paddlers from other clubs. I hope you can join us.

Please reply to rivertalk@alexhester.com if you wish to attend, as there are limited spaces available. A donation of £5 would be greatly appreciated to go towards the speakers meal, drinks and expenses.

RSVP: rivertalk@alexhester.com

The teams competing in this Event will be our neighbouring clubs Chiswick Pier, Blades, and us, the hosting team Edge. This is designed as a super-friendly event, and might even attract new people to the sport of paddling/polo! We hope that a bit of healthy inter-club rivalry will be created in this event!

We are seeking all Edge members to speak up if they would like to be part of Team Edge. No previous Polo experience is necessary, and we will be running training sessions in the pool throughout March for those who feel they need to get a bit of practise in beforehand. If you would like to get involed in this event either in the organisation or to be part of the team please email enquiries@edgepaddling.com.

Following the recent news about litter in the Thames and the ongoing discussion about the Thames Tunnel (see link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16802564) we want to make a difference. Please find attached a poster RRAR.boatrace2 for distribution and to spread the word.

The foreshore at Dukes meadows is covered in plastic litter and we your help to clean up this grot-spot to make it look “spick and span” for the boat race.

All equipment will be provided, please wear clothes you don’t mind getting muddy and which are suitable for the weather conditions.

Please contact judith.ressler@thames21.org.uk if you have any access requirements.
