Please be advised of the Queens Diamond Jubilee Pageant Rehearsal for Kayaks. The QDJ representative for kayaking would welcome Thames Tideway canoe clubs to participate and for two or three members from your club to join the rehearsal. Numbers have to low as the rehearsal is limited to 30 kayaks as per the attached Notice to Mariners. Entry requirements are detailed below.

This rehearsal will commence at Putney and paddle to Shadwell Basin nonstop as required by the Pageant Organisers. The purpose of this rehearsal is to ascertain whether sea /touring kayaks paddled by a variety of abilities can maintain the speed of 4 knots through the water (6 knots assisted by the tide) as required by the organisers of the Pageant. The organisers of the pageant have proposed further rehearsals.

Requirements to participate, joining instructions and dispersal arrangements..

Kayaks (single and double) will be:
not less than 4.3m (14ft) in length
Sea kayak or touring type
Fully equipped and fitted out for “moderate” water conditions.

Participants will be:
Familiar with, and competent in Tideway river conditions.
Capable of maintaining a brisk pace over 9 miles (4 knots through the water and 6 knots assisted by the tide)
Wear appropriate clothing and a buoyancy aid
Have a minimum BCU 2* kayak skill level.

And comply with directions from the Port of London Authority and Queens Diamond Jubilee Pageant representatives for kayaking.

Joining Instructions.
The rehearsal flotilla can be joined at Shadwell Basin OAC and the Cremone Riverside Kayaking Centre, Chelsea. Off street car parking is not available at these locations. Times for a departure from these locations to proceed to Putney Hard will be advised.

The rehearsal can also be joined at Putney Hard. Meet here from 1445hrs. There is usually on-street parking (free) towards the Hammersmith end of the Embankment beyond the rowing clubs.
There is a 6.9m tide at 1600hrs that could flood onto the Embankment and may put cars at risk. Dry metered car parking is available in nearby streets.

Registration of participants will commence at 1530hrs followed by a briefing in the vicinity of Ranelagh Sailing Club. Toilet facilities will be available in the sailing club.

Timings for the rehearsal are as per the attached Notice to Mariners.

Participants joining at Putney will be required to make their own arrangements for travel back from Shadwell. There are good public transport connections.
