West Coast Challenge talk by Bruce Joliffe
7pm Tuesday 10th May 2010
Union Bar, Chiswick Park, 566 Chiswick High Road, London W4 5YA, hosted by think360.
Bruce is an accomplished whitewater and sea kayaker and coach. In March 2011 he undertook a 313 Mile solo and unsupported paddle in his sea kayak from his home town in Largs West of Glasgow to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. This included some long and hazardous open crossings between islands. At the end of a Scottish winter the weather was unpredictable and often cold and stormy.
The paddle raised £15,000 for three charities including the Royal Marsden where Bruce’s friend died of cancer in 2006. His website www.westcoastkayakchallenge.co.uk describes the journey.
Bruce will set out how he planned and took on his challenge and made his dream to honour his friend a reality. The talk will show how a difficult and risky objective can be achieved with careful planning and preparation.
